Project officer- Surveillance

Job Summary

Responsible for strengthening regional and district systems for integrated disease surveillance and response. He will conduct assessment of the systems and make recommendations, train personnel and participate in development of policies, guidelines and SOP’s and provide technical assistance during outbreak response.

Overall Responsibilities
  • Work with the project coordinator on sub-national level planning, budgeting implementation, performance management, coordination, and reporting.
  • Assess surveillance and response systems at regional and district level and identify corrective actions.
  • Support district Task forces and rapid response teams on active surveillance, case findings, contact tracing, monitoring and other outbreak response measures during disease outbreaks.
  • Support dissemination of policies, guidelines and SOP’s for surveillance and epidemic response.
  • Support national and sub-national capacity building efforts of teams of human, animal and environmental health workers on IDSR, including training in Frontline Field Epidemiology
  • Support/mentor district surveillance focal persons and biostatisticians on epidemiological data statistical analysis and interpretation from EBS, IBS sources for decision making.
  • Work with Laboratory technicians to strengthen referral of surveillance samples.
  • Participate in the dissemination of epidemiological findings through reports, bulletins, presentations and peer-reviewed publications at sub-national, national level and international levels
  • Prepare regular and timely technical project reports
  • Support implementation science projects.
  • Participate in cross border partnerships/networks meetings for disease surveillance and  outbreak response
Required Qualification, Experience and Competencies:
  • ·         Masters training in Public Health, and/or health related field. Training in Field Epidemiology Training Program (complete or near completion) is an added advantage·         Sound knowledge of IHR (2005) and IDSR
  • ·         Extensive knowledge and understanding of the functionality of surveillance systems at national, district and community levels of the health systems in Uganda
  • ·         At least 1-2 years of experience working in the field as a practicing field epidemiologist.
  • 2 Years Relevant Experience
