Dos and Don’ts In Securing An Indispensable ‘spot’ At Your Job

We hustle a lot while looking for a job but forget the struggle easily after getting one. Most people start taking their jobs for granted forgetting that there are so many people waiting for a chance. Here are some of the things you can do to keep your job.

The Do’s

 Drive results

Joyce Among, a human resource consultant notes that employers hire people to increase productivity in a company as well as have good result. The ability to do this will help you hold your job as well as earn promotions. Look for innovative ways to drive change in how things are done and help your teammates where necessary.

Know your responsibility

She adds that it is important for every employee to strive hard towards doing their job well. “When thinking about how to keep a job, always strive to excel at work whether you enjoy what you do it or not,” she says.

Keeping focused and voiding destruction while at work is key towards getting good results. Some people get peers and forget the main reason they are at a job which is absurd.

Keep an open mind

John Mugerwa who has worked at Mukwano tea factory for 20 years notes that you may be asked to do two jobs or to take on responsibilities that are not in your contract. He says you should be open to new job duties and responsibilities.

“You need to show your bosses that you can do more than they hired you to do, this will even put you at a chance of salary increment in case of any chance,” he says.

Advance in case you are in a competitive field

It is important for one to keep their skills and certifications current in order to match the moving trends. “Get skills and certifications especially those which are appreciated by your employer. Better yet, a great way to keep a job is to obtain new skills that will make you even better at it, go back to school to build your CV where necessary” she says.

Keep a clear record

Mugerwa notes that it is important to keep the boss in the know of what you are doing such that they are able to keep track your work progress.  “If your boss is not aware of all your accomplishments, it makes it much easier for them to see you as disposable when budgets are cut.”

Volunteer in case of any new projects

Among adds that one should consider volunteering in case there is any project, this will help you gain more skills as well as show your employer that you can be depended on.  She says this gives you an upper hand in case of any opportunity. “Showing your care and concern even if it makes your job harder and longer goes a long way to securing your spot with the organization,” she notes.

Calculate your moves

Mugerwa says you should not be the one to complain about the snacks in the break room, argue over the temperature in the office, or otherwise act as if you are entitled to things your employer does not currently offer. To them, such traits might give your employer an impression that you are a wrong element who pushes others.

The Don’ts

Gossip

Among says that do not be the one to always spread gossip at the work place. She says it paints a bad picture if you are always that employee that is summoned in disciplinary committees over issues of back biting or antagonizing others.

Don’t be part of the problem

Mugerwa says an employee becomes a liability if they start being the cause of the problem at the work place. “Criticism is best when it is constructive, and a way to keep your job is to become known as a problem solver not a problem causer,” she says.

Don’t give up.

He says that for anyone to stay longer at any work place, it requires one to be persistent and patient no matter the conditions. “If it appears that your job is in serious trouble, you may be able to negotiate to keep your job by working fewer hours or by taking a temporary pay cut just for the good of the company,” she says.
