World Vision Uganda (WVU) is a Christian relief, development and advocacy non-government organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. We currently work in 53 districts and have 48 Area Programmes implementing projects in health & nutrition, water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH), livelihoods & resilience, education and child protection. World Vision (WV) is committed to the protection of children and adult beneficiaries from exploitation and abuse and will not employ people whose background is not suitable for working with these beneficiaries. All employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of all applicable background checks, including criminal record checks where possible.

Position: Communications Officer (2)
Report to: Associate Director Communications
Location: Kampala – National Office

Purpose of the position:
The Communications Officer is responsible for creating communications content on behalf of World Vision. They are charged with managing World Vision Uganda’s reputation and influence through content creation, effective media relations and enhanced Digital Engagement. S/he writes and distributes content to promote World Vision’s brand, work and impact. S/he responds to reputational risk, facilitates internal engagement, builds communications capacity of programme staff, and supports documentation for advocacy work and projects.
Key Outputs/Responsibilities.
Gather content
- Identify content ideas and storytelling opportunities that have potential to make issues in the World Vision Uganda context, or that align with the World Vision International 2030 Global Strategy.
- Respond to ad-hoc, urgent or short-turnaround time content requests from World Vision International Support offices and Global Centre Communications teams.
Produce and share content
- Package content in a way that fulfils briefs and needs from requestors. Ensure all content is uploaded on the in-house portal enabling others to easily find and use it.
- Evidence-based content that highlights issues affecting vulnerable children and families is produced and shared with World Vision internal and external audiences.
- World Vision’s impact, expertise, courage of staff, volunteers and partners is demonstrated.
Managing Reputation
- In consultation with your line supervisor, address reputation risk issues, implement recovery plans as per World Vision Global brand guidelines.
- Issues that might damage stakeholders’ perception of World Vision are proactively addressed.
- World Vision brand is communicated with honesty, passion and authenticity to donors, supporters and wider publics.
Public Engagements through Media
- Package strategic communications content to grow website traffic.
- Create bi-weekly social content calendars to engage World Vision Uganda’s social media followers & grow the organisation’s online/social community.
Mainstream media
- Generate press releases, editorial features; coordinate press coverage of key events.
Website and social media
- Produce and upload programme impact stories for the website. Develop social media content and engagement of online communities.
Facilitating internal engagements
- Participate in the production of internal communications materials.
- Work with “People and Culture” teams to orient staff on Communications Standard Operating Procedures.
Learning and Growth
- Utilise the World Vision “e-campus” and other learning platforms to continuously develop communications skills and competencies.
- Demonstrate learning and innovation in work done.
Key Outputs/Responsibilities.
- Qualifications in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Community Development, or related field of study with a recognised Institution of Higher learning.
- Understanding of transformational development and ability to translate technical texts into language that is easily understood by World Vision donors and supporters
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Digital management and engagement
- English writing experience and proof with an organisations communications department, a communications agency, NGO, news agency or international organisation.
- High level of cross-cultural interpersonal skill, personal maturity, and proven ability to influence multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to prioritise and manage multiple responsibilities.
- Technical video and photography experience preferred.
- Must be available for significant in country travel
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, general office productivity software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite) other programs for uploading and downloading information.
- Knowledge of design and desktop publishing software such as InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro and Illustrator offers an additional advantage.
- Experience with still photography and videography.
