Main Purpose/Mission of the job:

The Chief Finance Officer shall be responsible for the effective running of all support areas, i.e. Finance & Administration, ensuring that Sanlam Uganda meets its financial and compliance obligations for all its stakeholders. As a member of the Senior Management team, contributes to strategic and operational planning and oversight, and where required, leads project initiatives and teams.

 

Critical Responsibilities

Finance

·        Responsible for the financial & management reporting processes, ensuring the availability of timely and relevant information

·        Responsible for the effective management of internal controls and the operation and effectiveness of all processing, including the payroll & accounting systems, and ensuring that all expenses are as per the approved authorization framework.

·        Responsible for leading the development and review of annual financial plans, budgets & targets with other departments.

·        Provides timely and relevant performance reports to the Board, CEO and other management as required.

·        Ensures the integrity of the annual financial statements by ensuring that they provide a true & fair view of Sanlam Uganda’s affairs; meet legal requirements; comply with the relevant standards and reflect best practices.

·        Responsible for the financial & management reporting processes in Sanlam Uganda, ensuring the availability of timely and relevant information.

·        Responsible for the effective management of internal controls and the operation and effectiveness of all processing, including the payroll & accounting systems.

·        Responsible for ensuring all statutory returns are prepared and filed with relevant authorities in an accurate & timely fashion.

·        Responsible for managing/monitoring any tax issues – e.g., direct/indirect/withholding taxes.

·        Responsible for ensuring that the Company secretary adequately fulfils their duties to the company.

·        Management of relationship with the external auditors, including being the key contact for audit planning and completion. Implements any action points arising from the Audit Management Letter.

·        Liaising with SEM on Johannesburg when requests are made or information is required

 

Administration

·         Responsible for identifying emerging governance issues e.g. in Reporting; Accounting Standards and Health & Safety. Keeping Board, CEO and staff appraised and determining action where appropriate.

·         Ensures best practices in procurement.

·         Management of the company’s bankers, legal advisors, insurance brokers, and other professional advisors.

·         Responsible for Risk Management and Contingency Planning/Disaster Recovery.

·        Undertakes other duties and projects as may be specified by the CEO from time to time.

·        Preparing for and presenting at Board meetings, BOD committee meetings and General meetings

  • experience and personal competencies:

Knowledge required (to do the job):

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACCA or CPA).
  • Bachelor’s in Commerce/Business Administration degree

Experience required (to do the job):

·        Minimum of eight (8) years of general management experience in the areas of Finance and Administration, reflecting the key duties of this role.

·        Similar experience in the Financial Services Industry

Competencies:

·        Membership of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU).

·        Be highly skilled in the use of Microsoft Office applications.

·        Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

·        Ability to prioritise workloads and be capable of managing a broad range of areas.

·        Have sound judgement and a capacity for innovative thinking.

·        Be enthusiastic and motivated.

·        Working knowledge of an accounting package, preferably Sage.
