dfcu Bank is a fast-growing Bank in Uganda offering a wide range of financial solutions to its chosen market segments. We are seeking to recruit for the position of Credit Manager in our Credit Department under the CEO Domain to support our expansion strategy.
REPORTING TO: Senior Manager- Retail Credit
JOB PURPOSE: Reporting to the Senior Manager – Retail Credit, the role holder will evaluate and approve Retail (Personal and Business Banking) Credit applications within delegated approval authority, as well as recommend for approval to a higher sanctioning authority for deals that are outside their discretion.
LOCATION: Kampala
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Review and sanction all new and existing proposals within personal discretion in adherence with dfcu’ s internal credit policies, Risk Management Control Document and other required regulations including Bank of Uganda, the Financial Institutions Act and funders.
- Assess and recommend files outside their discretion to the higher sanctioning authority including the Senior Manager – Retail Credit, Head of Retail Credit, Internal Credit Committee, and the Board Risk Credit Committee in a bid to achieve the Bank’s disbursement targets of quality deals.
- Exercise judgment and discretion in the evaluation of higher risk classification credit proposals to manage portfolio quality and income growth.
- Analyse current credit data, financial statements of Personal and Business Banking borrowers to determine the degree of risk involved in extending credit; and also determine expected profitability of loans, as well as preparing reports justifying the decision made.
- Participate in periodic reviews of the credit policy to align to banking / industry trends, evolving regulations, and legal requirements.
- Provide support in structuring proposals to minimise risk and ensure full repayment, timely response on sanctioning of deals and excesses within agreed Service Level Agreements (SLA).
- Train and coach, the Credit Analysts as well as Relationship Managers in credit assessment / analysis, deal structure, policies, and procedures, conduct road shows on credit underwriting criteria for staff in the Credit value chain to uphold quality of deals booked.
- Monitor the overall quality of the Personal and Business Banking portfolio, through participation in the relevant governance meetings.
- Responsibility for personal adherence to governance, compliance, and lending portfolio controls to ensure compliance to both internal and external regulations.
- Review and adhere to service level agreement between business and credit to ensure customer receives timely feedback on applications.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE and COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree with bias in any of the following areas: Finance, Banking, Economics, Business Administration, Statistics, or related fields.
- Additional training / professional qualification in Business, Investment and Project appraisal, Risk management, financial analysis, and Credit certification.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a business or banking / financial services environment with at least 2 years in Credit risk management or sanctioning.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication skills (both oral and written) to allow for effective teamwork and interaction with stakeholders.
- Computer knowledge (Microsoft desktop products).
- Basic legal skills.
- Managerial and team building skills.
- Ability to work with limited supervision, driven enough to achieve set targets.
- Thorough understating of SMEs and the general business environment.
- Thorough appreciation of the Credit Policy, Financial Institutions Act and Bank of Uganda guidelines on asset quality.
- Awareness of current economic / market trends.
